Settling Down to Our Task

In Chapter 14 the Author shares that he grew up in a system where they were taught to memorize a new hymn every week. The concept was to train the memory and the brain to retain what was learnt. He says that modern day education looks down upon memorizing lessons which has had a very bad impact on the power of retention. He says that he often comes across students who complain that they have “rotten memories” whereas what they have are untrained memories.

He goes on to say that his memory and retention power helped him immensely, especially in Bible Studies.  What he listened to at the Church on Sundays would remain in his memory and help him in finding references and better relating to what he was learning in the Bible Class.

The Author advises the readers to start by memorizing a phrase or a verse from the Bible every day, preferably a favorite verse. This will help engage the brain to learn to retain.

He says that reading the Bible in a year seems a very difficult task to most people however if one breaks it down to a few pages and a few columns every day, one can easily achieve the goal. One must keep a note of what one has read.

The Author says that in order to give purpose to our Bible reading we can even take-up self-projects for e.g. collect all that is said regarding prayer, or which titles have been used for God, or what Jesus said about his coming into this world, etc.

The Author goes on to say that Bible Reading can be flexible; a few verses can be squeezed in on days when one is in a rush. He advises us to be practical and take Bible Reading as a serious matter as it is the Word of God, the most sacred of all things.

Important Lessons Learnt:

  1. We should Treasure our Bible as it is our most sacred possession
  2. We should make it a habit to read a small portion from the Bible every day
  3. It should be done as Bible Reading so that the Word of God remains fresh in our minds
  4. We should develop the habit of memorizing passages from the Bible so that our memory gets trained for retaining the divine knowledge that we gain.

Conclusion:
